Facing Star needs ‘absolute best’ from Alaska, says Compton

first_imgThe three-week break may have been a welcome respite, but coach Alex Compton is hoping it wouldn’t ruin his team’s momentum from the tailend of 2016.ADVERTISEMENT That’s the same effort Compton against Star on Wednesday.“I don’t know if you’ve looked at the stats, but (Star) has been the best offensive team in the league right now. They have so many weapons. They’re shooting the ball so well,” he said. The Hotshots lead the league in field goal percentage (46.4-percent), three-points (38.9-percent), third infree throw shooting (72.5-percent), and are fourth in scoring (95.3 points) so far this 2017 PBA Philippine Cup, enough to keep the American mentor on his toes going into this crucial tiff at Smart Araneta Coliseum.“You have to worry about guys driving to the basket. In nearly 3 years on job, Phil Jackson hasn’t fixed Knicks

first_imgNew York Knicks President Phil Jackson speaks with the media att Madison Square Garden training center on July 8, 2016 in Tarrytown, New York. AFP PHOTO / Bryan R. SmithNEW YORK—Carmelo Anthony had a half-season of clues about what Phil Jackson thought of him, and now it was his turn to evaluate his boss.Anthony had trumpeted his trust in Jackson when he re-signed in 2014 and reaffirmed it months later, even as Jackson continued trading away key players from the best team Anthony ever played on in New York.ADVERTISEMENT ‘Bad Boys for Life’ debuts so good with box office top spot Hall of Fame finalist Tracy McGrady told reporters this weekend he couldn’t remain quiet the way Anthony has.“I’m not going to let you disrespect (me) in the public’s eye like that,” McGrady said. “You’re not going to be sending subliminal messages about me like that and I don’t respond to that. I don’t operate like that. I’m just not going to do it. And then you hide and don’t do any media? You leave everything for me to talk about? Nah, that’s not cool.”Jackson retains the support of Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, who said in a recent ESPN Radio interview that he would not fire Jackson during the two-plus years that remain on his contract. (Both sides have an option to terminate the deal after this season).Dolan didn’t even express much disappointment in the results, even though the Knicks had their worst season ever in Jackson’s first season and are 72-149 since the start of 2014-15.“He was the best guy we thought we could find to run the New York Knicks,” Dolan said.Maybe if he’d been hiring Jackson to coach, as Jackson’s 11 championships are a record for coaches. But there were questions about how he would do as an executive with no experience, and the answers haven’t been good.He fired Mike Woodson and replaced him with first-time coach Derek Fisher, who lasted just 1 1/2 years. Starters Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton were traded in one deal, and J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert went in another early the next season. They were all mainstays on the Knicks team that won 54 games and reached the second round of the playoffs not even two years before Jackson was hired in March 2014.Now all that’s left is Anthony, and it certainly seems Jackson wants him gone, too. He would have to find a workable deal, hard enough given the 32-year-old Anthony’s salary and age, then get him to waive the no-trade clause he gave Anthony when he re-signed him.If not, maybe Jackson himself would leave this summer – though Dolan said he had no indication that was the 71-year-old Jackson’s plan. But he insists he can’t coach for health reasons and doesn’t appear to enjoy scouting and dealing with agents, essential parts of his job.He must be disheartened that the work he put into this team hasn’t paid off. Jackson hired Jeff Hornacek to open up the offense after two years of his favored triangle, traded for Derrick Rose, and signed free agents Joakim Noah, Courtney Lee and Brandon Jennings. None has sparked a turnaround, and drafting Kristaps Porzingis remains Jackson’s only inarguable success. He has made only three postings on Twitter all season.Yet he’s still made plenty of noise. He angered LeBron James by referring to his friends and business partners as a “posse” in an ESPN story. And he upset some of the league’s other power players with his actions toward Anthony – which could prove damaging when trying to lure free agents. Driven … Third-generation Sirgany dreams of Formula 1

first_imgJustin Sirgany is a 15 year old go kart and Formula 4 (F4) driver, who hopes to make it further up the divisions and drive for a Formula 1 (F1) team someday. Speed has been a concept familiar to Justin from an early age as he is a third-generation driver. He comes from a lineage of prolific drivers as his grandfather, Richard, was one of Jamaica’s champion drivers in the 1960s. His father, Stephen, was also no stranger to trophies, both at the Dover Raceway and in Rally Jamaica. Justin Sirgany was only five years old at the point he was allowed to get behind the wheels of a go-kart for the first time. “Racing has just always been in my blood because of my father and my grandfather,” Sirgany said. “So the first time I drove a go-kart, I just instantly loved it and I’ve raced ever since. I was just so excited. There was just never anything bad I thought about it.” Sirgany also looks to inspiration from watching the tapes of races of the late Brazilian F1 legend Ayrton Senna, whom he says he mirrors with his aggressive and equally calculated driving style on the track. “In go-karting, (my inspiration is) Kyle Kirkwood, who’s actually driving in F4, the same series I’m driving in. Just watching him from when I was young in karting, just inspires me to do better. Ayrton Senna wasn’t like your average driver. He took things to the next level. “I’m aggressive as well as being very careful with what I do. I don’t want to make any moves that might be too risky and then I could end up not finishing the race. I take calculated risks.” Sirgany signed with the Global Racing Group (GRG) earlier this year to pilot its F4 in the United States-based F4 Championship. Based on his performances so far, GRG’s president Christian Pedersen said he is pleased with the commitment he shows on the track. “Justin always pushes himself to next levels; always looking to improve on every inch of the track to find that 1/100s of a second. He is determined and focused to honour his heritage, and with an eye on reaching the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1, Justin is relentless in his efforts,” Pedersen said. Sirgany, who is currently a grade nine student at Hillel Academy, said that being a race car driver while a student, has its challenges, but said he manages to strike a balance well between both priorities. “I try to get the majority of my work done before I go away for a race,” he said. “It takes a lot of effort, but at the same time, I need to do very well in school, but when I go away, I’m very focused on the racing.” The youngster’s next race is at the Canadian Tyre Motorsport Park in Ontario, Canada, at the weekend of July 8 and 9. Sirgany said that for the remainder of the season, he is taking things one race at a time and is just aiming for as high as he can go. INSPIRATIONlast_img read more

DIAMOND DEBATE: A hot 100m hurdles

first_imgRaymond Graham: Wow. What a line-up we have for this women’s 100m hurdles in Monaco with a few weeks to go to the World Championships in London! The top medal contenders are all here in what will be one of the most exciting races this season.Andre Lowe: I’m most excited to see what the defending world champion, Danielle Williams, can do in this race. For some strange reason, we haven’t seen a lot of her against the world’s best on the circuit, but she will get her chance tomorrow.Raymond Graham: Indeed. Her performance here against these heavyweights will surely give an indication of what to expect at the World Championships, and she does love high quality competition.Andre Lowe: “Even without regular head-to- heads with her rivals, Williams has gone 12.56 seconds this season with only five women going faster this year. All five of them are in this race with world leader, world record holder and gold medal favourite in London Kendra Harrison leading an extremely talented line-up.”Raymond Graham: Harrison is the big favourite, of course, but if she gets early pressure, she could be in trouble as in her last race, the veteran Sally Pearson of Australia, who is rounding into good form, was right up there with her for majority of the race, and another run like this from the Australian could cause the American to panic, as she is normally fast away out of the blocks from her rivals.”Andre Lowe: She has dealt with pressure well. I’m not betting against her. It’s people like Jasmin Stowers who tend to struggle under pressure – by the way, I don’t think she will finish in the top three here for instance. Williams has a good chance to test Harrison especially with her better speed between hurdles. I am confident she will finish in the top three. Harrison will score another win, but it will be tight for the next two spots, and I am siding with Stowers over Pearson here.Andre Lowe: Harrison, Pearson and Williams will take the top three spots here, no doubt!last_img read more
