Davalos elected, Castillo reelected, to PI-ISD school board

first_img Share By Gaige [email protected] an uncontested race, Point Isabel Independent School District (PI-ISD) has reelected one member of its school board and elected another.Frank Davalos, Jr. is now serving on Place 6 of the PI-ISD school board, formerly held by Board President Jennifer Pinkerton. Cecilia Castillo, the Board Assistant Secretary in Place 7, was reelected. The elections were recognized during a May 5 school board meeting.“This community and this district has been very good to me,” Davalos told the PRESS, regarding his reasons for running for PI-ISD’s school board. “It’s time I give back. I’m ready to be a voice and serve the community.”Davalos previously served on the Town of Laguna Vista’s council for six years, and currently sits on the Laguna Madre Youth Center’s board. Davalos says he wants to “restore excellence,” when asked what areas he would like to address in the district for the upcoming school year.“We know what it looks like, and I believe our district can achieve it again,” he said.Davalos said his experience as a student of the district gives him a “unique and valuable voice” on the school board.Castillo told the PRESS she also wants to “strive for excellence” for the school district.“Because of this pandemic, my immediate focus and goal is to reduce any immediate negative impact it has had on our students and staff,” Castillo said, mentioning the COVID-19 pandemic that had made Texas Governor Greg Abbott to close schools statewide for the rest of the school year.Castillo says she will work to reduce the “Chapter 41” payment to the state, and upgrade facilities within the district “without increasing our tax rate.”A “Chapter 41” payment, also called the “Robin Hood” plan, refers to Chapter 49 of the Texas Education Code, which outlines how local property taxes are “recaptured” from wealthy school districts, such as PI-ISD, and given to lower income districts, creating equitable school financing.Property taxes pay around 64 percent of school financing in the state, according to the Texas Comptroller. In 2019,  $18,526,179 was “recaptured” from property taxes paid to PI-ISD, Texas Education Agency records show.Castillo said she would like to see a natatorium, an indoor swimming facility, within the district.PI-ISD’s school board cancelled their May 2 election on April 18, recognizing the candidates were running unopposed. Scott Dixon gets first win in Long Beach

first_imgScott Dixon celebrates his victory in Sunday's Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. (Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports)Scott Dixon celebrates his victory in Sunday’s Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. (Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports)LONG BEACH, Calif. — Beers all around Sunday for Ganassi Racing.First for Scott Dixon, who added a Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach victory to his long list of career IndyCar accomplishments. Then another to Tony Kanaan for essentially blocking Dixon’s closest competitor, Helio Castroneves, in the pits.Kanaan doesn’t drink beer, but that’s no concern for Dixon.“I’ll drink it for him,” he said.Kanaan’s interference was inadvertent, his pit box in front of his fellow Brazilian. Castroneves couldn’t leave from his service until Kanaan crossed his path, and that excruciating split-second delay allowed Dixon to blow past on the track, having pitted the previous lap.Q&A: Kanaan on overcoming a family loss and becoming a championCastroneves said he nearly hit Kanaan.“It was close,” Castroneves said. “Really close.”That sequence was only on Lap 29, but it changed the complexity of a predictable 80-lap race. Once in the lead, Dixon had the strength to hold Castroneves off.“Definitely a game-changer for us,” Dixon said of Kanaan’s move. “Obviously, he didn’t do it on purpose. There’s nothing (the sitting car) can do. If you go you’re going to crash into him.”Dixon earned the 36th victory of his career to break a tie with Bobby Unser for fifth place in the sport’s history. Next on the list is Al Unser with 39, then Michael Andretti No. 3 with 42.As important now is the fact Dixon has one Long Beach win, two counting his Indy Lights win in 2000.“It doesn’t count,” he laughed in reference to the latter. “Nobody ever got excited about it.”chipganassi_0419-01Castroneves and Team Penske tried to spice up the lead battle with a quick second and final stop, but Dixon actually extended the lead by another second. Indy cars don’t have cruise control, but Dixon was on it.The No. 9 car even went into fuel conservation mode in the waning laps and still won by 2.2 seconds. Castroneves settled for second for the 37th time in his career, tying Bobby Rahal for second place in that category. Mario Andretti did it 56 times. The rest of the field was more than 11 seconds behind Castroneves, but at least it was interesting back there. Juan Pablo Montoya took a couple of passing shots from fellow Penske driver Simon Pagenaud, but the Colombian held the Frenchman back.Kanaan finished a close fifth with Sebastien Bourdais sixth and Josef Newgarden seventh as Chevrolet rolled in the aftermath of IndyCar-mandated changes to its front wings.MORE: Pit crew safety concerns never stop in IndyCar, NASCARDixon had an average finish of 15.0 in eight previous IndyCar trips to this tight street circuit, with only a single top-10 finish (fourth in 2010). He had led only 25 laps; he tacked on another 44 in this one.“I finally got it right,” he said.So did the IndyCar Series. After a smash-up in last month’s season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the embarrassing show last week in wet New Orleans, this race was clean, dry, fast and pure. There was only one caution, an early slowdown when rookie Gabby Chaves broke his left front wing on Jack Hawksworth’s right rear. Will Power was the big loser during that caution. Trying to recover from a mistake in qualifying that forced him to start 18th, he picked the wrong lane coming to pit road on Lap 7. When Luca Filippi stalled, Power stalled behind him.Power fell a lap down and never got it back, finishing 20th among 23 cars as the race stayed green the rest of the way.Conor Daly had a steady and productive day as the two-day replacement in Dale Coyne Racing’s No. 18 car. Competing in his first IndyCar street race, Daly stayed on the lead lap throughout, even lapping teammate Francesco Dracone.Toyota Grand Prix of Long BeachSunday’s results from the 1.968=mile street course in Long Beach, Calif. Zidane throws in La Liga towel for Champions League focus

first_img Upd. at 12:35 The French coach has explained to his fooballers that he will make a lot of rotations in the league, despite publically denying he is throwing the towel in. Barcelona are heading towards the title and Madrid would have to pull off something incredible to stop them. The squad understands the message: Give it all for the Champions League. Zinedine Zidane has made it clear to Real Madrid the priority is the Champions League. Seven points behind Barcelona and with a visit to the Camp Nou pending, the Los Blancos coach will make rotations in the Spanish top flight and prioritise on Europe. It could be like in 1998, when Madrid won their seventh European Cup after a disastrous season in La Liga, finishing fourth, 11 points behind Barcelona. It’s a risky tactic that Florentino Perez had given the OK to.  CETcenter_img 19/02/2016 LL.Mlast_img read more
