first_imgAustralia defeated India by 35 runs in the fifth one-day international and clinch the five-match ODI series 3-2 at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on Wednesday. It is the first time that India have lost at home since losing an ODI series against South Africa in October 2015, which is also Virat Kohli’s first ODI series loss. Incidentally India have lost three consecutive ODIs under Kohli’s captaincy. After the win, a jubilant Australia coach Justin Langer credited his players for their historic win over India.”All the credit to the players. We just make them prepare for the game but they have to go out there and perform in crunch situations. Incredibly proud of the boys,” Justin Langer said at the post-match presentation.Langer though joked that the win will make the selector’s job, who will be tasked with picking the squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup, harder.”It is going to be tough to pick the World Cup squad. It has been an unbelievable tide since India arrived in Australia,” Langer said.AUSTRALIA WIN THE SERIES! They showed character and great fighting spirit. India had the better of us in Australia and we were able to have the better of them here,” Langer said.advertisementComing to his team, Langer is excited about his bowlers forming partnerships and also credited Usman Khawaja for his man-of-the-match performance.”I think Jhye Richardson and Pat Cummins are forming a great partnership, they can also contribute with the bat. Usman Khawaja also has been fantastic, having not played much of white-ball cricket, in the last 12 months. So credit to him,” Langer said.Speaking after the match, Australia pacer Pat Cummins was a happy man that he has been able to show his form with the red-ball in limited-over cricket.”Played a bit of ODI cricket before, but I felt I bowled well in the series in Australia and hopefully will continue this form through the World Cup,” Pat Cummins.Cummins agreed with his coach that the Australian selectors who will name the 2019 ICC World Cup squad, will have a hard time.”I would not want to be a selector, it’s gonna be a tough job with few guys still to come in,” Cummins said.”The spinners bowled well and the quicks were incredible as well. The batters have stepped up today. Playing consistent cricket is the key and it’s been a good series for us. The biggest challenge playing in India is to adapt to the conditions and it’s my first series in India, proud of the boys,” Cummins said when asked about the team’s all-round show.Peter Handscomb, who has been instrumental in Australia’s win, said that the win over India will give them a lot o confidence going into the World Cup.”Means a lot to come over in India and win a series. To do it now gives us great confidence going towards the World Cup. Something special (to win the series from 0-2 down) to go with our chase the other night (in Mohali). Feels really special to come down here and win the series,” Peter Handscomb said.last_img read more
