Dollar Appreciates Sharply in First Quarter

The preference for Jamaican dollar assets was reflected in increased net private capital inflows, the impact of which more than offset the demand for resources to meet current transactions,” Bank of Jamaica (BoJ) Governor, Brian Wynter told today’s (August 12) quarterly press briefing at the Bank, in downtown Kingston. He explained that in order to “smooth the pace of movement in the exchange rate,” the bank had purchased some US$54 million net from the market during the quarter. This contributed to a Net International Reserves (NIR) stock of US$1.79 billion as at the end of June, which was not only higher than the end of March stock, but also above the end of June target.“At end-June 2010, the Bank’s gross revenues amounted to US$2,52 billion, representing 19.7 weeks of projected imports of goods and services, surpassing the benchmark of 12 weeks of imports,” he said.Meanwhile, he informed that market-driven interest rates declined over the period alongside the appreciation of the local currency. The average yield on the benchmark 180-day Treasury Bill fell by 123 basis points to 9.26 per cent, while the yield on the 90-day instrument declined by 166 basis points to 8.52 per cent.“Concurrent with the lower yields, there was continued narrowing in the spreads between government of Jamaica global bonds and emerging market bonds and US Treasuries, respectively,” he explained. Private money market rates also reflected this declining trend, Mr. Wynter noted.last_img read more

Baby brain is real, and it makes you a better mum

first_imgNew Zealand Herald:Pregnant women have long complained that their baby bump makes them forgetful. Now a researcher has claimed there may be scientific truth in this ‘baby brain’ syndrome – and that there is a very good reason why expectant mothers develop short-term memory loss. The suggestion is that women’s brains change during pregnancy so that they will be better able to concentrate on their newborn’s needs after the birth, with the result that they become less focused on other things, such as where the car keys might be.Laura Glynn, a psychologist at Chapman University, California, claims that these changes may be brought about by massive fluctuations in women’s hormones as well as tiny movements by the foetus.Read the whole story: New Zealand Heraldlast_img

Sox Pound Kluber, Indians in 8-3 Win to Send Tribe to 2-3 on Young Season

first_img Matt Loede CLEVELAND – The Indians offense again did little to give the sparse crowd at Progressive Field much tocheer about on Wednesday, but it was the outing of their ace, Corey Kluber, that really did them in as they fell to 2-3 with an 8-3 loss to Chicago. The Sox slammed Kluber for six runs, four earned, on eight hits with three walks and four K’s in just 3.1 innings. The bullpen did its job, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings, with those two runs coming off a blast from Yoan Moncada in the eighth to make it an 8-1 game at the time.Again though the offense was awful, as the team had just two hits going into the ninth, when Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer to make the final look a little more respectable. Here’s a few takeaways from the latest Tribe loss as they get set for the Blue Jays on Thursday with a 6:10pm first pitch.1. Just a Bad Day at the OfficeIt wasn’t tough to see early on that Corey Kluber just didn’t have ‘it’ on the mound, unlike what fans saw out of him against the Twins.Terry Francona tried and did give him time to get in a groove, but in the end he was not sharp at all as the Sox just beat him up for six earned runs, eight overall, in 3.1 innings.“I don’t think it was really much out of the usual way teams attack me,” Kluber said after the loss. “I just didn’t do a good job making good pitches, and I left too many balls over the plate.”Maybe the biggest takeaway from his outing is that whatever was going on was not the result of an injury, and that he said it was just a day where he didn’t feel comfortable on the mound.Kluber now at 0-2 will get a chance to get back on the winning side Tuesday in Detroit.2. An Early Chance WastedThe Indians had Sox pitcher Carlos Rondon going early, as they had runners on in the first inning down 3-0, and they got it to 3-1 with runners on first and second.Hanley Ramirez struck out, and after a wild pitch the Tribe had runners on second and third with two outs, but Greg Allen was crossed up with a slider that he chased, thus ending by far the best chance the Indians had to do damage against Rondon. He settled in, and would from there not allow another hit, he struck out nine on the day, and walked one over six innings of work.Other than the eighth inning on Monday, the Indians offense has just not put a good inning with a couple hits, walks or even reaching on an error together. They had that chance in the first on Wednesday, but again the strikeouts did them in.3. Some Ugly NumbersConsider that now the team sits at 2-3, which isn’t a big deal five games in, but the alarming number is the fact this club is hitting (gulp) .171 (25-146) on the season. That’s not going to win in any league, and no matter who you have on the mound you have to find a way to hit the ball better than that. The club has struck out 13 times in four of the five games (six the other game for a total of 58 times), and their inability to put the ball in play is killing innings. After Wednesday’s loss the team still has a number of players that are hitting .000 – Roberto Perez, Greg Allen, Eric Stamets.Other than Carlos Santana and the two homers by Hanley Ramirez, there’s been nothing positive from this offense. Disgraced gymnastics doctor’s alleged victims file new lawsuits

first_img Related Scott Olson/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Athletes who have accused disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar’s with sexual abuse have filed two new lawsuits Thursday against the International Federation of Gymnastics, as well as USA Gymnastics, the United States Olympic Committee and Michigan State University.Scores of women and girls, including Olympic gymnasts Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas have publicly said they were abused by the former USA Gymnastics team physician, who is already behind bars.Thursday’s legal move marks the first lawsuit against the International Federation of Gymnastics, the council that oversees competitive gymnastics on a global scale.Attorneys allege that USA Gymnastics and others should have acted on allegations of Nassar’s alleged abuse sooner, arguing that Nassar could have been stopped years earlier.“The first report was made in 1997,” Mo Aziz, one of the attorneys representing the alleged victims, said at a news conference Thursday.“These young women were born in 1996, they do not have to be sitting here today,” he added. “The hundreds of Mr. Nassar’s victims would not have to exist had USAG, had Michigan State University and the other defendants responded appropriately.”Emily Vincent, one of the alleged victims who filed the suit, said in a press conference on Thursday that she was a 15-year-old high school swimmer when she was sexually abused by Nassar.“How is change going to happen if people don’t rally for it?” Vincent said. “This should never happen to anyone in the future and I want to be a part of making that a reality.”Victoria Carlson, another alleged victim, said at the news conference that she did not even identify herself as a victim of the physician’s alleged sexual abuse until she read another women’s account of her own.“I never wanted to go public with this,” Carlson said Thursday. “I actually never even wanted to tell my parents.”This past February, Nassar, a former Olympic doctor, was sentenced to an additional 40 to 125 years in prison for abusing scores of girls and women in serial sexual assaults that went on for decades. The sentencing came on top of 60 years he received after pleading guilty last December to federal charges of possession of child pornography.“I just signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassar at his sentencing two months ago.USA Gymnastics told ABC News that it does not comment on pending legal matters.“USA Gymnastics is sorry that any gymnast was harmed by the despicable crimes Larry Nassar committed,” the group said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our athletes are our highest priority and at the forefront of the decisions and actions that USA Gymnastics is taking to build a culture of empowerment that encourages our athletes to speak up, especially about difficult topics, and promotes a safe, positive training environment.”MSU did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment Thursday, but in a statement issued in February following Nassar’s sentencing in January said that the sentencing “represents another important step toward justice. Over the past several days, many here at MSU, including President [Lou Anna] Simon and trustees, listened to the brave women who came forward to tell their stories at Nassar’s sentencing hearing.”The statement continued: “Nassar’s behavior was horrific and repugnant, and it is deeply disturbing to know that his crimes were often committed on campus. He will rightfully spend the rest of his life in prison.“We are committed to continue supporting those in our community affected by these terrible crimes. The Healing Assistance Fund was created to help survivors access any counseling and mental health services they may need. The thoughts and prayers of the entire MSU community are with these women.”Simon later resigned her post as MSU president. The U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement: “The many brave survivors and their stories are bringing important changes to sports. The reprehensible behavior of Larry Nassar and other abusers has no place in our Olympic and Paralympic community. Organizations, institutions and individuals alike must reignite a culture for competitive excellence — one that is a safe, respectful and supportive environment. The USOC has made significant progress to strengthen protections for athletes, and we recognize that our work is never done.”The International Federation of Gymnastics did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment Thursday. Zidane throws in La Liga towel for Champions League focus

first_img Upd. at 12:35 The French coach has explained to his fooballers that he will make a lot of rotations in the league, despite publically denying he is throwing the towel in. Barcelona are heading towards the title and Madrid would have to pull off something incredible to stop them. The squad understands the message: Give it all for the Champions League. Zinedine Zidane has made it clear to Real Madrid the priority is the Champions League. Seven points behind Barcelona and with a visit to the Camp Nou pending, the Los Blancos coach will make rotations in the Spanish top flight and prioritise on Europe. It could be like in 1998, when Madrid won their seventh European Cup after a disastrous season in La Liga, finishing fourth, 11 points behind Barcelona. It’s a risky tactic that Florentino Perez had given the OK to.  CETcenter_img 19/02/2016 LL.Mlast_img read more

Hardware: Software-Defined Network (SDN) Technology Threatens Hardware Giants

first_imgSoftware-defined networks (SDN) are networks created by software that abstracts and controls basic networking hardware components.  It’s similar in philosophy to how virtualized servers can be abstracted with software from the component physical machines.  SDN is expected to make networks more easily configurable and adaptable to the data flow and capacities which they control. An advantage of SDN is that complex networks can be built out of simple network hardware — eliminating the need for expensive routers and switches from companies like Cisco.  SDN is basically a layer that acts like a virtual software switch or router that is smart enough to be able to do much of the job which is typically embedded inside of today’s physical network devices.  This also means that an entire network can be configured using the single SDN software interface rather than having to individually manage and program networking functionality into each network device.SDN is “designed for virtual, dynamic and flexible networking that allows organizations to more easily modify, control and manage today’s physical and virtual networks.”Rajeev Nagar, group program manager on the Microsoft Azure project talked with InformationWeek about the applications of SDN technology, saying that “scale changes everything.  When you’re provisioning and de-provisioning thousands of networks a day, it’s impossible to do that all manually, making automation essential.”The Ethernet switch market is currently brings in $22-billion a year, and according to IDC, Cisco controls about 60 percent of it.  Meanwhile, the SDN market is expected by IDC to clock in at around $2 billion in 2016.  The SDN Central report finds that the SDN-enabled network market will rise from just 2 percent in 2013 to nearly 40 percent by 2018, which SDN Central estimates at that time will be worth $1.2 billion.John Chambers of Cisco has dismissed SDN as a challenge to their business.  Chambers said that “History is littered with companies big and small, upstarts and established, that bet against Cisco and failed.  We’re already onto our next challenge beyond SDN.”But in a survey sponsored by Cisco themselves, the results found that 47 percent of IT managers are evaluating SDN solutions.last_img read more

The Benefits and Pitfalls of ESPN’s new Developer Center

first_imgWhat do you do when you have a treasure trove of valuable data that developers would love to get their hands on? Release an API and let them create applications for you. That is precisely what sports network ESPN did today by announcing its Developer Center replete with multiple APIs for programmers. Developers can tap into ESPN’s reservoir of data on athletes, teams, media, stats and research to create sports apps with rich data for fans across the world. This is not a classic free API platform though. ESPN is owned by ABC, which is owned by Disney. Disney is not known for sharing nicely. Developers can use ESPN’s headlines API for free but otherwise have to form a brand partnership with the sports giant. Yet, considering ESPN’s prowess and well of rich data, that may not be a bad thing. dan rowinski Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement For instance, fantasy sports gurus could tap into ESPN’s data to provide real-time insight and analysis to their apps. Trivia apps can get almost any sports answer in a matter of seconds. Niche sports sites can provide rich data on matchups and schedules and locations. For instance, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) is having its basketball championship tonight. Tapping into ESPN data can provide readers better context into a league that is otherwise overlooked by those not associated with it. ESPN also has an advanced statistics group that crunches numbers and gives the biggest stat heads all the information and context they can consume. Being a baseball fan that analyzes advanced stats, it would be helpful to me if a developer took the raw data out of ESPN and created visualizations and dynamic charts. There are other sources on the Web where this information is available but to my knowledge none of them release it as an easy to use API. Working With ESPN This is where it gets tricky. ESPN wants you to have this data … it just does not want you to profit from it. That is reasonable considering it is ESPN’s data. Opening up this data as a platform is a way for the company to brand itself across multiple applications. It is important to read the fine print.Developers cannot advertise in an application that uses ESPN APIs except through specific network approved ads. Presumably ESPN would split revenues with developers from those apps but the terms of service make no specific mention of sharing. “ESPN may make available to you a Tool or other API that permits you to include ESPN-approved advertising in your Apps. Unless otherwise set forth in the Information Form or on a separate “Advertising Addendum,” you may not include any advertising or sponsorship in your App (unless included in the Content made available by ESPN).”ESPN is not Facebook. When Facebook opened its platform in 2007 is was a revelation on how a platform can open itself to be built upon and let everybody grow and prosper. Facebook created the blueprint for what it takes to create a successful developer program and platform. As for as open platforms go, ESPN’s developer program is one of the most closed systems of rich data that we have seen. Essentially the network is saying, “here is out data but play by our rules and make sure we get all the credit for everything you do.” While the API may be an enlightened idea from a sports network, its terms are not. ESPN’s APIsThere are six APIs in ESPN’s new developer center. The only one that does not require a premium partnership with the network is the headlines API that allows developers to grab content from the company covering sports and athletes. The other five can only be used by ESPN “premium partners” or the network itself. There are a lot of things to like in those five APIs. One of the great strengths of ESPN is the ability to track sports information in real time and store it in a database. For instance, if you have ever followed a sports game from your mobile device or computer, ESPN’s “GameCenter” application is one of the marvels of modern sports reporting. Individual leagues track their own games such as similar services from the MLB, NHL, NFL and NBA but the difference between other leagues and ESPN is that the network tracks every game, everywhere. Looking up to the second updates on yesterday’s Creighton vs. Illinois State game? GameCenter has it in almost real-time. The other large sports networks can do this as well (such as Yahoo and CBS Sports) but when it comes to data and developers, ESPN is winning the race. Here are the benefits of the six APIs with descriptions from ESPN: Tags:#Data Services#Digital Lifestyle#mobile#Statistics#web Related Posts Athletes: “Allows you to get rosters of players for various sports, as well as biographical and statistical data for individual athletes.” Research Notes: “Allows you to tap into ESPN’s vast knowledgebase of exclusive sports data tidbits compiled by our Stats and Information Group. Research Notes are available by sport, athlete, team, and even game.”Standings: “Enables you to get the latest standings for a particular sport by division, conference, or overall. Data is also available by year and by season type (preseason, regular season, playoffs).”Headlines: “Allows you to interact with ESPN’s various news stories. ESPN publishes hundreds of unique pieces of text content each day, covering dozens of sports and hundreds of athletes and teams.”Scores & Schedules: “Provides game/match information, including start times, venue, competitors, score, and stats across every major sport.”Teams: “Enables you to get information, including roster, stats, and more, for individual teams. You can also fetch teams by conference or division.”What can be Built?ESPN showcases a couple stalwart applications that use its APIs such as Flipboard and Pulse. It also shows the Brigham Young Cougars app that leverages the scores API to keep track of all things BYU. Foursquare uses the schedule and research APIs to check into sporting events. There are so many more useful functions for these APIs than just news readers and specific teams.
