This second contract, when combined with the first contract, awarded on September 7, 2017, will achieve the newly authorized depth of 54 feet throughout the more than 20-mile-long Charleston Harbor Entrance Channel. This is the final contract that will be required to complete the deepening of the Entrance Channel and is part of the overall USD 529 million project cost. The construction of the entire project is expected to take 40-76 months.“The awarding of the second construction contract for dredging the Charleston Harbor Entrance Channel to 54 feet is tremendous news for South Carolina. This multi-year contract, in conjunction with the contract awarded in September, provides for the construction work for the entrance channel to be completed without the potential for delays and is the largest contract ever to be awarded by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Charleston District,” Jim Newsome, South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) president and CEO, commented.“We look forward to seeing dredges in our harbor within the next few months and ultimately the completion of this effort that will make Charleston the deepest harbor on the East Coast at 52 feet,” Newsome added. The deepening will allow access to ultra large container vessels (ULCVs) without tidal restriction.Separately, SCPA informed that its board of directors approved a USD 69.5 million contract for the purchase of six new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to serve growing container volumes and big ships calling the Port of Charleston.“When the cranes arrive in late 2019, deepening of the Charleston Harbor to 52 feet will be nearly two-thirds complete and construction of our new container terminal will also be nearly finished,” Newsome said.Manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries, LTD (ZPMC), the five cranes offering 169 feet of lift height will be delivered to the Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal, the only permitted container terminal under construction on the US East or Gulf coasts. Phase One of the terminal is scheduled to open in mid-2020 with an annual capacity of 628,000 TEU.In addition, one 155-foot crane will be delivered to the Wando Welch Terminal, SCPA’s busiest container terminal. The Wando Terminal received its first two cranes of this size in August 2016, and ZPMC is currently manufacturing two additional cranes for delivery in February 2018. By 2020, 9 of the 13 STS cranes at the Wando Terminal will offer 155 feet of lift height to support SCPA’s handling of two 14,000 TEU vessels simultaneously.Earlier, SCPA reported that it handled 539,995 TEUs from July through September, a nearly 4 percent year-over-year increase.last_img read more

10 BC Safeway stores to close local union boss comments on Calgary

first_imgNEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – A union representing Safeway employees in British Columbia says 10 stores in the province will be permanently closed, affecting about 1,000 employees, as labour negotiations are set to begin.United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1518 says Sobeys Inc. informed members of the decision this morning on the eve of bargaining between its union and Sobeys for all of its Safeway stores in B.C.Union Local 1518 also says Sobeys indicated that if it gets favourable terms and conditions for its FreshCo discount banner, it may open FreshCo stores at five of the closed Safeway locations.Ivan Limpright, president of Union Local 1518, says the timing of the announcement to B.C. Safeway employees is suspicious. He says that last week on the first day of bargaining with a United Food and Commercial Workers union in Manitoba, Sobeys demanded poverty concessions and then walked away from the table.Limpright says now that negotiations are set to begin in B.C., the announcement of 10 Safeway store closures is a “classic scare tactic.”Sobeys did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the closures. The Safeway locations slated for closure in B.C. include Lougheed Mall, City Square, Sunwood Square, Point Grey, Royal Oak, Blundel, Broadmoor, Newton Town Centre, Strawberry Hills and Mission. Both Safeway and Sobeys are owned by Empire Company Ltd.If the company has any plans for Calgary, they haven’t looped in UFCW Local 401 president Douglas O’Halloran, who only recently found out about the Vancouver stores.O’Halloran added his heart goes out to the impacted Vancouver employees, some of whom have likely worked there for decades.last_img read more

Economic diversification for Alberta is easier said than done economist

first_imgCALGARY (660 NEWS) – Albertans have been hearing about it for decades, we need to diversify the economy. While it is more pronounced during a financial downturn for the oil and gas industry, it is often easier said than done.ATB Financial Economist Todd Hirsch said this is certainly not the first time this issue has been brought up.“I’ve been an economist in Alberta for more than 30 years and that has always been a struggle. How do you diversify Alberta’s economy?”Hirsch noted the reality that diversification is not always an easy process, especially during times when the oil and gas industry is booming.“Diversifying the province is not as easy as it might seem. There have been different attempts over the decades to diversify the province and none of them have been particularly successful.”He did say we are in a better place now than we were.“Compared to the 1980s when you look at the statistics of the makeup of Alberta’s economy, we are more diversified today than we were in the 1980s.”He also believes we are continuing to advance on the economic diversification front.“What we are seeing in 2018 and going into 2019 is probably the best chance of seeing more diversity because it is likely to happen organically.”By organically, he means while the oil and gas sector struggles more people will be willing to try and change career paths. He looks to areas like agriculture, tech, transportation and logistics and tourism as possible industries that people will be willing to switch to, but he does note those sectors don’t typically pay as much as oil and gas.last_img read more

first_imgManager Didier Deschamps explained how 14 of his footballers have never played in the World Cup before, but they had a little helpFrance national team boss Didier Deschamps recently won the FIFA The Best Award for his coaching abilities. And in an interview with FIFA.com, he explained how the mixture of young and old made his team win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.“I selected young players because I believed they had the requisite quality. The doubts I had were more about their experience, as there were 14 of them who’d never played at a World Cup before,” he said.“But they had the more experienced players all around them, so that helped on a psychological level. What I perhaps hadn’t envisaged was that they’d prove to be so decisive.”“That’s to their credit and no one can take that from them, but back when I called them into the squad, I knew that they could deliver,” he explained.Euro 2020Report: Euro 2020 qualifying Group H George Patchias – September 11, 2019 Euro 2020 qualifying Group H is being controlled by France and Turkey, but Iceland is still in with a shout.Reigning world champions France ran…“As I see it, there are three types of leaders: technical, physical and mental. You might have one player with all these attributes or different players with one of them each, but it’s not a case of just one leader,” he added about the veterans on the team.“For example, in our case, the captain Hugo Lloris very much typifies a leader but there are others who exhibit those qualities too. You have Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi, who are very expressive, while Raphael Varane also contributed at every level.”“And for that, you obviously need to have some experience and to have played big competitions, because then it’s something that comes naturally,” he concluded.Another trophy for the coach! 👏🏆 #FiersdetreBleus #TheBest pic.twitter.com/HenXI9p8H0— French Team ⭐⭐ (@FrenchTeam) September 24, 2018last_img read more
